Elias saw in a prophetic vision
The little cloud of Mary rising free
Out of a bitter sea.
It is to Mary as a cloud that I
Today address my cry.
Over me hangs the searing sun of God,
Earth will not take my roots, and on this shore
The heat of summer solstice walks once more.
Until I am acclimated to love
And know its weathers sometimes must be made
To burn the fertile heart and blind the brain,
My need is urgent for a little cloud
To shield me with its shade,
And in that shade to cover me with rain.
